Residents and visitors are invited to come along and celebrate Australia Day at the Leeton Shire's Awards & Citizenship Ceremony at Mountford Park on Thursday 26 January.
Start the day with a complimentary BBQ breakfast hosted by the Rotary Club of Leeton from 7.30am, and be entertained by the Leeton Town Band from 8am, before the official event kicks off at 9.15am.
The official ceremony will begin with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony – a reminder that Aboriginal people are the foundation of Australia’s story and the Wiradjuri people are caretakers of the land in which we gather for this event.
We will welcome nine new Australians to the Leeton Shire in a Citizenship ceremony, followed by an address by our 2023 Australia Day Ambassador Mr Peter McLean, executive officer of the Australian Organics Recycling Association, who is passionate about the environment and our soils – healthy soils mean healthy people, environments and economies.
We will then acknowledge the nominated persons who have made significant contributions to the Leeton community with the announcement of our local Australia Day Awards including Citizen of the Year, Achiever of the Year, Lifelong Citizen of the Shire, Sportsperson of the Year and more.
The ceremony will be live-streamed via the Leeton Shire Facebook page.
Following the official proceedings there will be a bush tucker lunch - savour some emu spring rolls and marinated kangaroo, sample a witchety grub pizza and indulge in lemon myrtle cheesecake and wattle seed ice cream courtesy of Michael Lyons and Sandhill Artefacts.
This event is proudly funded by the NSW Government through the Reconnecting Regional NSW Community Events program.
