Message from the Honourable Gladys Berejiklian, Premier of NSW:
Each Australia Day, we celebrate who we are as a people and our achievements as a nation – the Australian values that guide us and the individuals who espouse these values through their actions and words.
We recognise our national story begins with the First Australians, and we honour the unique Indigenous heritage that is so central to our identity. That we are home to the world’s oldest continuing culture sets us apart from every other country, and should fill every Australian with such great pride.
On Australia Day we express our gratitude to all those who have shaped our nation – from the Indigenous Australians who have been custodians of the land for thousands of years to the early pioneers and generations of migrants who have embraced our nation and made it stronger. We acknowledge too those who serve, from our armed forces to the police and emergency workers who protect our communities and everyday volunteers who help those most vulnerable. Through hard work and sacrifice, all of them together have ensured that freedom, egalitarianism and the ‘fair go’ continue to be alive and well for successive generations of Australians.
Australia Day is a time for all of us to acknowledge and appreciate the qualities that have made Australia the best nation on earth, but also to remember the responsibilities we share as citizens today. Just like our Australians of the Year, each of us has a role to play in strengthening our nation and protecting Australian freedoms and values for future generations.
This Australia Day, as we celebrate across NSW, let us be proud and not take for granted all that makes Australia great. We can look forward to the future with great optimism.
I wish you and your family a very Happy Australia Day.
