Delungra Public School is a small school with a big heart. With just 29 students, it championed an initiative to protect koalas devastated by bushfires and drought, while raising vital funds for The Rescue Collection, an animal rescue group.
With koala populations under threat, Delungra Public school transformed the school grounds into a sanctuary. Students cared for the koalas' trees and set up water stations, and the school became a release point for koalas in the area. Koala support groups were also brought in to ensure the school was offering the best care possible, and to provide updates on the koalas' health.
After the 2019/2020 bushfires, Delungra Public School set up a Facebook appeal page to collect much-needed donations for The Rescue Collection. By the end of the initiative, they’d collected all the items on their wish list and raised additional funds to help local WIRES volunteers.
