Plastic pollution has serious effects on sea life. When 12-year-old Shalise Leesfield learned it was killing seals, dolphins, whales and turtles she set out on a crusade to clean up local beaches and save the animals. She decided to start with discarded fishing lines left on beaches.
Shalise collected data and worked with the council to secure a $77,000 EPA litter grant to address marine litter. The project includes signage, new bins, educational flyers and local engagement with fishers through media to enforce marine litter rules. The project will continue until June 2019.
Shalise is also one of the Youth Ambassadors for Clean Up Australia Day 2019, a Green Innovations Award ambassador and was selected as host of the Australian launch of the Earth Echo Plastic Seas Expedition with Philippe Cousteau.
