Each Australia Day communities are invited to participate in the NSW Local Citizen of the Year Award. The awards recognise outstanding achievements by individuals and organisations within local communities.
In 2019, a new award category was introduced enabling each local government area to celebrate a champion of an environmental initiative with these local heroes in the running to become the State winner.
The 2019 NSW Environmental Citizen of the Year Award has been sponsored by Return and Earn - the largest litter reduction program ever undertaken in NSW - because these finalists share Return and Earn’s ultimate goal of improving the environment across NSW.
The award recognises outstanding efforts by individuals or organisations to preserve the environment, reduce litter and improve recycling, or use the Return and Earn scheme in an innovative way to fundraise for a meaningful cause.
Return and Earn, which has so far resulted in almost 1.8 billion containers being returned for recycling, will provide $5000 to support the winner’s initiative and to help them achieve their environmental goals.
