Hampers of Hope
Griffith City Council
Hampers of Hope – the 2021 NSW Environmental of the Year winner – is back in the running to take out the Award for a second time.
Hampers of Hope which is a project run by Griffith Meals on Wheels, redistributes surplus fresh food from local supermarkets, farmers and businesses to support disadvantaged members of the community. These include local families in crisis, refugees, asylum seekers and victims of domestic violence.
The organisation's focus is to reduce, reuse and recycle. The volunteers collect more than 400 kgs of food and 170 hampers per week, providing hundreds of daily meals. Hampers of Hope also addresses issues around food wastage and helps preserve the environment by redistributing unused food along the supply chain.
