I am really upset by the amount of people wearing Australian Flag thongs around this time of the year. It is a disgrace to our nation and the flag that our forefathers fought to defend. To sum it up, its bad enough walking over the Australian flag on the ground. How about walking all over it all day. Check out the etiquette for our flag. You'd be surprised at what a disgrace it is to do this. Something to think about.

Michael.

You know you've been to goo BBQ on Australia Day when you leave with burnt fingers and lips from eating of the BBQ. But this year Australia Day will be spent in Banff, Canada. Looking forward to meeting other Aussie's over there. Aussies can take our culture everyhwhere!

To Aboriginals:

I understand Australia Day was horrid for your ancestors, but I think it's come time to move on. My relatives came here from England in 1932. My ancestors didn't harm yours. I am eternally sorry for your peoples hardships, but I didn't do it. Australia day ISN'T just about the first fleet. It's about all Australians. Be they from Europe or Asia, Iran or Aboriginals. It's about celebrating the life and chances we have in this country.

I encourage all of you to, whilst understanding your troubles in the past, realise that, as AUSTRALIANS, as the first Australians, this day is as much for you to celebrate, as any other. Celebrate your land, your culture, your life. Use the time to share your history with us. Use the time to build bridges and become our friends.

The invasion was 200 years ago. It's time to move on.

Australia Day means a lot of things to a lot of people. As a kid, you grow up thinking 'Yay, a day off!'. The older you get, the more you realise that, looking around you on Australia Day, in the sunshine, at the BBQ you've organised, watching the boats compete, attending a cricket game thrown together by a group of friends in your backyard - you realise that everyone is happy, smiling, enjoying themselves, enjoying the weather...There is nothing better than turning to someone you dont know in the park, holding up your can of VB with recognition in your eyes, and saying "Cheers mate!"

Australia is special in many ways.

the aussie colours, the animals, the way we speak, the animals, our flag, our national anthem, US!

looking into our aussie anthem we will see that there are a few words that when we sing it we will actually see the significant things that are very australian.

Our history even has a lot of things that makes australia 1 nation that sticks together to make australia 1 special place.

We all want to share to the world not just australia's luxury but our outdoors our ULURU or our THREE SISTERS , THE 12 APOSTLES.

australia is a nation that we live 4, so enough talkin - lets have a barbie and sing waltzing matilda

An acquaintance of mine in the US tells me he adores Australia a little more than his homeland. At around the time of Australia day 2007, he felt rather ill, and what helped him through it was speaking with me on the web about the sunshine, and warmth of Australia which was a long way from the cold he was going through. He thinks Australia is special also.

I was a great experience for the Nippers to paddle across the harbour on Australia day, the 9 children from catherine Hill Bay travelled down and enjoyed the whole days activities. It was mentioned this was a once off event for nippers - It would be a fanastic event for young Austratians to look forward to each year. I am positive it would be well supported.

We love our home, and 6 generations of Aussie family that helped to build the nation... But it's not just about people - the bush, it's native animals and plants, even the spiders and snakes are a part of the web that keeps us alive and healthy. Australia is blessed with natural assets that keep our cheeks rosey, and money spins from them so that means we can afford beer in the esky. Raise the sacrificial amber liquid in thanks for our people AND the land that keeps us.

I love a sunburnt country

A land of sweeping plains

of ragged mountain ranges

of drought and flooding rains

I love her far horizons

I love her jewel-sea

Her beauty and her terror

Australia day is my daughter’s birthday. I realised that when I first came to Australia. And I think it is a GREAT coincidence and I think she will be proud one day of it too (so I hope this won’t change). I come from a European background. I was brought up with values not different at all from the Australian values – i.e. live in peace and prosperity; respect to basic human freedoms etc… I totally respect them and I know what they mean to me. And I know this is what unites all Australians together. I do not want those values altered… Australians are really one of the warmest people on earth. I like the Aussie spirit, and this is what keeps me here.

I feel Australia close at heart as my home and I am proud to show it. I am so lucky to be here with my family and I thank all Australians for letting me into “their” club. If somebody outside Australia asks me “where is home for me” – I know the answer. It is where peace and my family lives together…

Im living here in Mexico and educating my aztec friends on the virtues of our country and what the day means to us Aussies. I was aksed what it means and why we celebrate it. Naturally I gave a small history lesson to back it up but then proceeded to try and describe "mateship", our relaxed lifestyle and the reasons why we are truely appreciated across the world as a race of people. We are proud of what we have achieved being so relatively isolated from the rest of the world and we are not willing to give that up to any other form of thinking.

I love my country and proud to show it off to others any chance I get.

The things that make Australia Day great are the things that us Aussies living abroad miss...

- mateship

- the never say die attitute

- kicking a footie or playing cricket in the back yard

- the sizzle of the barbie

- the Aussie wit

- not taking things too seriously.

Hope all those enjoying the southern sun, have a great Aussie Day.

Australia has got to be simply the BLOODY BEST!

..in; understanding others religions etc, able to help our fellow neighbour(s), bearing when unexpected events happen and how can I forget we are simply are the best in all sports!

I think it just goes to show when it comes to any sport game's e.g. Soccer World Cup, Rugby World Cup, Cricket etc Australia truly shows great sportsmanship in all sports and aspects of human life.

Sport really does reflect the Australian way of life no matter what the sport maybe.

The rest of the world should look at Australia’s way of life and take note!

Australian’s are good sports all round no matter what the out look is; For example 2006 Soccer World Cup Vs Italy…need I say more!!! (which we can only tolerate so much of)

Enjoy a yet another Australia Day in our ever more growing nation!

Like any country Australia has made mistakes in the past but it also gets a hell of a lot of things right as well more than it doesn't. Sure many of it's animals are dangerous but generally speaking they will not attack you if unharmed. Anyway it's the day we should all celebrate the things Australia gets right.

With our larger-than-life personalities and laidback attitude we're quite easily the most approachable people in the world. More than happy to share a joke or chat with a perfect stranger, we even possess an abundance of that rare ability to laugh happily at ourselves. Couple our easy-going nature with such a strength in the 'mateship' we form from the most casual of social connections and you'll realize why Australians are some of the most loved tourists in the world.

Truly a land of stark & vivid contrasts; rainforests, coastlines and outback all worthy of a place on canvas, full of unique and natural wonders found nowhere else on Earth. Internationally reknowned metropolitan cities and remote townships that consist of a solitary pub. A perfect climate that occasionally surprises with a touch of spontaneity. All of which is completely enwrapped by a layer of blue ocean that seperates the only politically-unified continental landmass from the rest of the world.

Australia Day is everyday, but the 26th of January is the visual manifestation of how proud we Australians feel (and rightly so!) all year round. So wave those Australian flags and proudly sing our National Anthem in unison with your fellow Aussies, stand up on our National Day show the world how indomitable the Australian spirit truly is!

Australians are the friendliest and most accepting people and Australia is the most wonderful country on this earth.

We came from New Zealand for a holiday in Sydney 10 years ago and as we emerged from the airport into the beautiful day outside I had the overwhelming feeling that I had arrived home, so much so that I found myself weeping quietly and what was even stranger was my son Scott felt the same. We never thought it would be possible to come and live here, for many reasons, but 'life' had other plans. We immigrated here in 1998 and have been Australian Citizens for 6 years and are so proud of that.

We still love New Zealand as it is a beautiful country which also has great people but Australia is our home now.

G'day fellow Aussies. Have a wonderful, wonderful day on the 26th and celebrate everything in life.

Aussie, Aussie Aussie!

I agree with all that has been said in these columns, Australia is a great country ! ; however I do wonder just how many of these subscribers do know just what it is we are celebrating ???.

I am an 84 year old WW2 and Japanese POW veteran, born and bred in Australia, as were my parents and grandparents. I have read, seen and heard hundreds of thousands of words about about Australia Day celebrations, BUT not one word about just what it is we are celebrating !!!.

Maybe it has something to do with Captain Arthur Phillip with his first fleet taking formal possession of the colony of New South Wales on 26th January 1788, and becoming it's first Governor ?...

This year we could be 219 years old !!!!

My family arrived here in Oz on a convict ship named the "Scarborough" in 1788.

They've produced quite a flock since then - over 5,000 of us - and you thought rabbits were bad :-)

Australia is great to live in. Even better after traveling abroad many times. It has many freedoms that other countries could not even achieve. Recently in Sept 06, i was able to walk right up to the PM and have pic taken at the Temore (NSW) Air Show. Try that O'seas. you'd probably get shot.

Wheather is BBQ's on a Saty arvo or roast on a Sundee. Freedom to worship practically any religion you like. Any job you please and any beach or breeze!

This is the place for me....

We will be celebrating with friends at the "shack" - all 20 of us. The day will start with a very loud CD playing all 11 versions of Advance Australia Fair, from the

Wiggles to the Bush Wackers to Julie Anthony to the Police Band - best CD ever. The shack will be decorated in green and yellow streamers and balloons the flag will be raised. During the afternoon we will have pie floaters (a South Australian icon dish of a meat pie floating in green pea soup - yum) and hopefully a serve of freshly caught blue swimmer crabs. This will be followed by a lamb roast in the evening and for desert a chocolate cake decorated as an Aussie thong. Our "band" will be having a "gig" during the afternoon. Good mates, good food and the beach - cant get much better than that.

Decorating will be a rushed affair on Thursday evening so we could use all the help we can get. We will be attending as many of the water based events as possible and have been told it "is the best day of the year" on the water. We simply can't wait !!

Whats great about Australia…Where can I start?

It’s a country which prides itself on friendliness, acceptance and multiculturalism and is also one which is renound for its great sites and sounds. Australia in my opinion is the greatest country on earth and the only one in which complete strangers find themselves saying ‘gday’ to each other and giving passers-by a cheery smile. Australia is great and famous for its cities, its landmarks, the quality of life and its people and our sporting culture, but the word that most defines Australia in my mind is generosity – the kindness and courage of each and every Australian towards each other no matter what the circumstance makes me proud to be able to call myself an Aussie!

I am a primary school teacher in Queensland and truly believe we are the lucky country (in every way) Some close friends and I were discussing the need for educating our children about the traditions and history of this great nation. I am only 35 and think it is quite sad to see children growing up without a real sense of what being Australian means. Australia Day to me, means spending time with family and friends at the beach! Since Australia is celebrating 100 yrs of Surf Lifesaving - what a great place to be.

I'm an Aussie from WA who moved to the states about six years ago. From the other side of the world (geographically speaking), I want to wish every Australian, both home and abroad, a happy Australia day!

I moved to the US when I was 16, and having spent quite a few years away, I am ever grateful for having grown up in such a hospitable, warm, friendly country. You only truly realize how unique and fortunate we are to live in a country with such a high standard of living, quality of life, and amazing natural beauty.

I miss the cricket, meat pies, the surf, but most of all, I miss the friendliness of the Australian people. For Australia Day, I'm trying to organize a Washington celebration, but I'm going to listen to the triple j countdown and drink some Aussie beers as a toast to our nation's continuing success!

Chelsea,

You could always move to Australia if you really wanted to, there are reciprocal agreements between Oz and NZ which allow free unrestricted movement of citizens between the two nations although admittedly the traffic is mostly in one direction. I just think NZ needs to start believing in itself a little bit more. Heaps of Aussies love NZ as well and both countries have a lot to be proud of.

There are so many wonderful things about Australia but one thing that stands out for me is the mateship!

From the ANZAC's in WWI to the firefighters in Victoria, from the way we pulled together as a nation to help those devastaed by cyclone Larry to stopping on the side of the road to help someone with a flat tire.

It's mateship that makes Australia great!
